A doula cannot do what a nurse does. A nurse cannot do what a doula does. When both work in harmony in an evidence based way, profound things happen.

Q:
How do Doulas feel about Nurses?

A: Doulas LOVE nurses. Labor and Delivery nurses, Postpartum recovery nurses, Nurse Midwives... you name them, we love them!

Here is the magic...
When you break it all down, a good doula has NO agenda other than helping the birthing woman empower herself and make informed choices while providing unconditional support. A good nurse has NO agenda other than assisting the birthing woman in achieving a healthy birth while providing great medical support. Both fully devote themselves to birth work, it is really incredible to witness and be a part of the teamwork.

Nurses are some of the biggest birth supporters out there and I appreciate how they have encouraged me throughout my journey in birth work. They pull me aside, thank me, and tell me that they've been taking notes of techniques I use during labor. We brainstorm Spinning Babies maneuvers together when baby's position and labor patterns tell us to. They joyfully hold the other end of my rebozo with dads while I quickly provide counter-pressure. When leaving a family after a birth, we exchange business cards. I network with, go to coffee with, and cry along with them when the impossible happens. I thank them for treating my clients with such respect and providing mothers with evidence based care.

Nurses
work so hard for my clients and can make these birthing experiences truly remarkable. Although I am in no way affiliated with any birth location or provider, I encourage my clients to bring nurses snacks and treats at their births. These women/men 100% deserve it!

The majority of my referrals come from L&D nurses or nurse midwives, and in no way am I surprised by that. Why?

It's simple...
A doula cannot do what a nurse does.
A nurse cannot do what a doula does.
When both work in harmony in an evidence based way, profound things happen.

Nurses, you rock.
Doulas love you. ️<3
